The Biggest FAST Attrition Report You'll Ever See
Featuring overall attrition rates, differences by single-IP channels and non-IP channels, differences by language, genre and key sub-genres, and a list of all FAST channels to vanish from the Earth
Attrition is a funny topic. Everyone seems to love reading about it but no-one wants to be seen on this list!
However, I have dug deep and created as fully comprehensive an analysis on attrition within FAST as has ever existed. So if learning about what’s being dropped and where is something you’re interested in, keep reading.
As is the way with data, it can be manipulated to show a particular story. So I have opted to beat the manipulators at their own game, and show all the possibilities at once. Ha ha, charade you are!
As can be seen, if we look at the month-to-month attrition rate, things look fantastic as only around 2% of FAST channels fall each month. But look at it on annual basis and it becomes a much more frightening environment where close to one-fifth of channels go extinct.
An interesting trend emerges when we compare the fortunes of single-IP channels against other formats. On a 1 month attrition basis, there’s little difference between the two, but go to 6 or 12 month bases and a cavernous gulf emerges that suggests single-IP channels have greater stability. My hunch is that it is brand-related, and that if I had the time or strength to assess non-IP channels by those featuring a TV or studio brand and those that don’t, we would see a similar trend emerge.
Language is another area with attrition differences: English-language channels tend to last more than their Spanish equivalents.
What’s going on with movies? At first I thought the attrition slump there would be due to Holiday channels going off FAST until the season begins again, but it wasn’t replicated a year before. The most stable FAST genre is news (local news having a 6 month rate of 98%) with general entertainment channels less unstable recently than music, movies and sports channels.
Diving deeper into general entertainment channels with sub-genres that feature larger base sizes (i.e., 50+ channels) and we find that classic TV, comedy channels, true crime and reality—all formats primed for live viewing—have a larger stay rate than documentaries and drama-based channels.
Perhaps if we explore exactly what channels came off the FAST air between December and June, some more patterns might emerge. Hope you love a good alphabetical list! But remember, there’s more than one reason for attrition. Pop-up channels are one, companies opting to pull their channels from a service for lack of payment another, replacing a channel with a different strategy a third. Thus being included on the below isn’t necessarily a sign that something wasn’t working.
FAST Channels No Longer Available in June Which Where Available in December
(That sounds like the title of a pamphlet from the 1700s). One thing to note - if a channel only has one provider, it was an exclusive channel which has now departed the world of FAST.

A couple of things will strike you based on this list. One is probably how you’ve not heard of many of these channels - FAST’s brandification continues. The other is how frequently Local Now and Sling Freestream appear on this list. Here is the percentage of channels which were available in December but not longer are in June by FAST service:
And with that, I am pretty much exhausted on attrition and I am sure you may be too!
