FAST Channel Attrition Rates
How many FAST channels aren't making it on a monthly, 3 month, 6 month and annual basis
Ahhh attrition. The scourge of FAST channels as it means a channel has exited the FAST universe. In this analysis, we look at channels which exited the ecosystem entirely, as in, they ceased to be carried by any of the services tracked monthly here at FASTMaster. This time around, the analysis is on a month-to-month basis. Next time, I shall smooth things out on a 6 month rolling average.
The biggest headline: 15% of all channels did not make it one year later.
On a one month basis, just under 3% of channels were removed between January and February. This is around the basic trend line for FAST, FYI.
Moving to a 3 month-basis and FAST attrition is at one of its higher rates. But don’t panic, November is when many festive pop-ups appear, so this 7% attrition rate is impacted by that and also STIRR’s FAST business meeting its doom. (Side note, if CSSE’s woes lead to the Redbox service imploding, they currently carry 9 exclusive channels so that would also help a future month see a dip. Hence why next month we will try looking at the data through a 6 month rolling average).
Hmmm 6 month attrition is also at one of its greatest points. Yet FAST channels overall are at one of their highest points ever (1,959, 3rd all time) so what does this mean? “Bad” channels are being cycled out and refreshed with new (branded) channels as the brandification of FAST continues.
On a 12 month basis, beginning from January 2022, attrition rates are actually very good, with 15% one of the lower levels seen. It remains close to that old adage I coined in October that “one in five don’t survive" even if that was regarding non-Single IP channels.
To end on that note. Attrition rates remain lower for Single IP channels than average. Although 12% of those active in Februrary 2023 were gone in 2024. In case you were thinking “well boy howdy, wouldn’t it be swell to know which Single IP channels didn’t make it?”, FASTMaster always has you covered with the facts:
